Crex Meadows CommentaryFor years, I had passed through Grantsburg and noticed the sign for Crex Meadows without realizing there was a 30,000 acre wonderland just three short miles north. Just follow the geese (painted on the road through Grantsburg) and you’ll find yourself at the Crex Meadows Visitor Center. Stop in and pick up a driving tour map, and be prepared to experience what Burnett County was like before the advent of lake homes and mini-golf. I saw sand hill cranes by the dozen, geese, ducks, snowy egrets, and countless varieties of smaller birds. It’s a place that changes dramatically with the season, and I’ll be stopping again this fall when the marshes are flooded and the skies are full of migrating waterfowl. Another Burnett county “treasure” right in our back yard! Take an extra hour or two on your next trip to the lake and detour through Crex Meadows. Gayle Teskey |
